About

Inkanyezi means “star”.

Every star in this sky is one thing a South African child learns between Grade R and Grade 7. The lines show what each idea builds on and what it unlocks. Some stars you can play.

Why we built it

Most South African children grow up learning in two or more languages, often with a grandparent, aunt or older sibling helping with homework. Many families reach the internet only through a phone and pay for every megabyte. Inkanyezi is designed for that reality:

How to use it

  1. Tap a star to see the question for your child.
  2. If your child can answer it, tap We know this. The star turns gold.
  3. Follow the lines back to Builds on if your child is stuck. Gaps usually start lower down.
  4. Stars with a ring can be played. Finish the game to light the star.

What's inside

191 concepts and 244 links across Mathematics, Languages, Natural Sciences & Technology, Social Sciences and Life Skills, arranged by CAPS grade. The map is a guide for families, not an official curriculum document.

Privacy

Playing never needs an account. To make Inkanyezi better we count, anonymously, which stars are opened, which scenes are played and which questions children find hard. Each phone or computer gets a random number for this. We do not store names, IP addresses or browser details with these counts, and we delete them after 13 months.

Parents, guardians and teachers can create a free account to save progress for each child. Accounts are for adults only. For each child we store only a nickname, a grade and the stars they have lit. Please use a nickname, not a full name. You can remove a child, or delete your whole account and everything in it, at any time from your dashboard.

Sign-in is protected by a “press and hold” check instead of a puzzle, so we never send your activity to an outside company. Inkanyezi has no advertising and no tracking by other companies.
